Perhaps the richest in that malty, vanilla, nutella complexity that some layered medium roast yancha have, this Zui Gui Fei Rock Oolong is one to slow down for.  Unique aromas and flavors meld, all tightly fixed into a mouthfeel of smooth and thick salivation-inducing ambrosia.   A decadent treat, this one is the fanciest of chocolate cakes of the release.

醉贵妃 Zui Gui Fei "Drunken Concubine" / "Drunken Noble Consort" was featured in our rare breeds gift box and is a treasured addition to Mr. Xu's impressive curation of lesser known varietals he cultivates and produces.  The cultivar is considered inherent to the Wuyi Mountains, part of the 武夷菜茶 Wuyi Cai Cha or "native" varietal group, that was at some point separated from the wild-growing tea plants that had naturalized there since earlier times.

Not in a tucked away hinterland like many others from this release, Mr. Xu's gardens are in the more well-known 莲花峰 Lianhua Feng "Lotus Peak" pocket of Wuyi, a classic 半岩 Ban Yan "Half Cliff" locale that some consider now to be 正岩 Zheng Yan "Genuine Cliff" part of the core of the scenic park.  Mr. Xu is a talented fourth generation tea maker who has many established family gardens of various varietals in select areas in the greater Wuyi Mountains, farms gardens that produce Guazi Jin, Shi Ru "Stone Milk", as well as Bulao Dan. We fell in love with Mr. Xu's teas not just for the diversity of interesting cultivars he stewards in an ecologically responsible manner, but also for his fastidious and exacting methods for producing smooth teas without acridity and off flavors.  We recommend acquiring an aroma spoon to amplify the fragrance intricacies when cupping this special tea (Mr. Xu seen using one in the photos below).
